About the Project

From January to July 2012, I will be working with the government of Montserrat to help establish a music service for all the schools on the island. I will be working with the Ministries of Education and Culture to set up community-based music education projects for the young people on the island.

The main aim will be to expand the scope of music education in schools and to expose students to an even wider variety of music genres through practical workshops and musicianship classes. I will also be leading and assisting new and existing ensembles on Montserrat, encouraging participants to compose their own works through both structured and free improvisation.

This project is a collaboration between the Montserrat Foundation UK and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Sir George and Lady Judy Martin, both of whom are trustees of the foundation, have a wide array of assorted interests in the island hailing back to the days since AIR Studios was set up on Montserrat to record the Beatles and many other well-known artists. The foundation looks after sport, culture and music interests of this small island.

This project has been kindly supported and funded by the Montserrat Foundation UK, Montserrat Enterprises and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
